On Thursday 2nd October 2025, the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, His Excellency Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía, visited St Cuthbert's as part of his wider tour of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. The visit began with the celebration of Holy Mass, with Bishop Stephen Wright, Canon Peter Leighton, Fr William Nichol, and Fr Andrew, the Archbishop’s Secretary concelebrating.
In his welcome, Bishop Stephen reflected on the Archbishop’s journey from Holy Island yesterday, to Durham Cathedral later today, noting how fitting it was to celebrate Mass in a community under the patronage of St Cuthbert. In his homily, Bishop Stephen reminded the boys they are “made for greatness”—not through status, but through service to others. The Nuncio shared Pope Leo’s greetings and encouraged the boys with the Holy Father’s message: “Aspire to great things, to holiness, wherever you are. Do not settle for less.”
Following Mass, Archbishop Miguel blessed the new Dining Room, dedicated to St Benedict, model of hospitality. Speaking about the new facilities, Mr Murray reflected on St Benedict’s call to welcome all guests as Christ, and reminded the boys that this same spirit of hospitality should shape their lives.
The visit concluded with a tour of the school, including lessons and a stop in the art department—a highlight for the Archbishop, who is an artist himself—and a meeting with the Faith in Action Group.
A joyful and memorable occasion, the day was a powerful reminder of God's presence among us, the guidance of the Holy Angels, and our call to live lives of faith, friendship, and service.
St Cuthbert, pray for us.
Holy Guardian Angels, watch over us.
