Yesterday, our School Council took part in a powerful and timely leadership development session with Head Boy, Felipe and Deputy Head Boy, Charlie. With pupils from Years 7 to 10 gathered together, the workshop explored the meaning of leadership through the lens of faith, service, and global responsibility — inspired by the recent death of Pope Francis and the forthcoming papal conclave.
The session opened with a reflection on the life and legacy of Pope Francis, whose leadership was marked by humility, compassion, and courage. Pupils discussed the qualities that made him a respected global figure and spiritual guide, and considered how those same values can shape the way they lead within our school community.
Using a selection of leadership quality cards, pupils worked in groups to explore what makes a great leader — identifying traits such as integrity, vision, listening, and service. Many were surprised to realise that some of the most powerful leaders, including Pope Francis, lead not through force or fame, but through gentleness, moral conviction, and selflessness.
The group also learned about the significance of the conclave, where Cardinals from around the world gather in prayer and discernment to choose the next Pope. This led to a thoughtful discussion about the importance of listening, spiritual guidance, and wise decision-making — qualities that are just as important for young leaders as they are for global ones.
Each pupil completed a personal reflection titled “The Leader I Want to Be,” where they identified a quality they admire, something they want to improve, and one way they can serve others through their school council role this term. Their responses showed maturity, insight, and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference in school life.
The session concluded with a group prayer for the Cardinals preparing to choose a new Pope and a renewed sense of purpose among our student leaders.
We are proud of the thoughtful contributions made by our School Council and look forward to seeing their servant-hearted leadership in action throughout the term.
