Since 1881, St Cuthbert’s has been dedicated to the formation of fine young men, prepared to take their rightful place in the Church, in society, and in the wider world. For generations, we have offered a challenging yet deeply supportive environment in which every pupil is encouraged to discover, develop, and share his own God-given gifts.

The story of St Cuthbert’s is an exciting and fascinating one. It has never been an ordinary school nor will it ever be so. It is no mere organisation but a living entity, changing and adapting when circumstances require it, holding firm and steadfast when a principle is at stake. The strength of its traditions does not lie in antiquated rituals or oft rehearsed anecdotes but in promoting a certain outlook on life, in firmness of purpose and in dedication to hard work, the pursuit of excellence and to the Catholic Faith.

St Cuthbert’s was founded by the clergy to offer a Catholic education to the boys of Newcastle and the surrounding area. It has performed this duty since 1881 under the leadership, guidance, and direction of Catholic educators both lay and cleric alike.

As a boys' school, we draw on a long tradition of understanding how boys learn, grow, and flourish. Research consistently shows that boys thrive in environments that combine structure with inspiration, clear expectations with authentic relationships, and tradition with thoughtful innovation. At St Cuthbert’s, we intentionally craft our curriculum, our pastoral care, and our wider school culture to meet these needs, ensuring that our pupils are guided, stretched, and supported in ways that speak directly to their experience. This tailored approach allows our young men not only to achieve academically, but to grow in confidence, resilience, and maturity.

We remain proudly and unmistakably a Catholic school, welcoming boys of all faiths and none. Here, faith is not an optional extra. It shapes the relationships we build, the standards we uphold, and the hopes we hold for every young man entrusted to us. A St Cuthbert’s education is far more than a comprehensive curriculum.

We strive to challenge our pupils to become young men of integrity, educated in faith and for justice.

We are committed to forming young men of competence, equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a changing world; of conscience, able to discern right from wrong and act with honesty; of compassion, ready to stand with those in need; and of commitment, prepared to persevere in faith and in their responsibilities to others. These values, drawn from the heart of Catholic Social Teaching, define what it means to be a St Cuthbert’s boy.

Above all, we seek to help each young man recognise his unique calling and answer it with energy, passion, and purpose. Whether in school, in our local community, or further afield, our pupils and alumni serve, lead, and work to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

I look forward to welcoming you to St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School, where generation after generation of young men are formed into great men, educated in faith and for justice.
