'Go forth with purpose': Year 11 Begin Study Leave on the Solemnity of the Ascension

Year 11 Information for Parents

This week, our Year 11 boys marked an important milestone in their school journey as they began their study leave on the Solemnity of the Ascension. It was and is a moment rich in meaning and perfectly timed as they prepare to take their next steps.

The Ascension reminds us of Christ’s call to his disciples to “go forth” with courage, purpose, and faith, trusting in all that they have been given. In much the same way, our Year 11 boys now enter a new phase: stepping forward from the structure of daily school life into a period of independent study, preparation, and personal responsibility. It is a time that calls for resilience, discipline, and belief in themselves, qualities they have been steadily developing during their years with us.

The boys gathered for a thoughtful and uplifting assembly led by Ms Vasey, Head of Year 11. Drawing on the lyrics of Drive Safe, she invited the boys to reflect on the journey they have travelled so far, the importance of making wise choices, and the need to look out for themselves and one another as they move into this critical period. The message was clear: while the road ahead may not always be easy, they do not travel it alone, and each step should be taken with care, integrity, and purpose.

The assembly concluded in a spirit of celebration, recognising not only academic effort but also the growth in character that defines this year group. In a memorable and characteristically British twist, the occasion ended with ice creams shared, despite torrential rain and even hailstones. The weather may have been unexpected for May, but it did little to dampen spirits. Instead, it served as a fitting metaphor: whatever the conditions, these young men continue forward with good humour, resilience, and a sense of community.

As they embark on study leave, we keep Year 11 in our thoughts and prayers. They leave not just as boys preparing for examinations, but as young men shaped by their experiences, ready to embrace responsibility and face new challenges.

We wish them every success in the weeks ahead. Go forth with confidence, remain steadfast in your efforts, and above all, travel well and drive safe. We look forward to celebrating with you in August.
