On Tuesday 12th May, we were delighted to welcome Smajo Bešo for his second visit to the school as part of the 'We Are Memory in Action Holocaust and Genocide Education Programme'. This visit formed part of a Legacy Project on which Year 9 pupils have been leading.
The visit marked an important continuation of the work that the Year 9 pupils have been engaged in through this project, helping the boysto deepen their understanding of genocide, remembrance, and the importance of standing against hatred and discrimination.
During his visit, Smajo kindly agreed to lead two seminars involving more than 100 Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. Throughout the sessions, pupils listened attentively as he shared his deeply personal experiences of surviving the Bosnian Genocide. His testimony gave the boys a powerful insight into the devastating human impact of prejudice, conflict, and intolerance.
Smajo spoke with honesty and courage about his childhood, the outbreak of war in Bosnia, and the lasting effects the genocide has had on individuals, families, and communities. Those present were particularly moved by his reflections on resilience, hope, and the importance of remembering the past to help build a more compassionate future.
The seminars were a valuable opportunity to engage directly with living history and to consider thoughtful questions about Smajo’s experiences. Many pupils commented afterwards on how emotional and inspiring they found the sessions, and how hearing a first-hand account made the events they had studied feel much more real and meaningful.
Once again, our thanks go to Smajo for giving his time so generously and for sharing such an important message with our boys. His visit will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on everyone who attended.
