Pupils at St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School recently had the privilege of welcoming Martin and Smajo as part of the Memory in Action project and a unique, survivor-led education programme. Their visit gave pupils a powerful and personal insight into the realities of genocide and the importance of remembering the past.
Martin shared his experiences of the Holocaust, while Smajo spoke movingly about surviving the Bosnian genocide. Hearing these stories directly from survivors had a profound impact on everyone present, bringing history to life in a way that textbooks alone cannot.
Pupils also spent time with Martin and Smajo discussing legacy projects and exploring how they can implement their messages into life at St Cuthbert’s, ensuring the lessons of the past continue to inspire the school community.
Learning from Martin and Smajo encouraged pupils to reflect deeply on the suffering they endured and the importance of standing up against hatred, injustice, and discrimination.
Staff and pupils alike described the visit as both emotional and inspiring. It served as a reminder of why learning about the Holocaust and other genocides is still so important today — not only to remember the victims, but to help prevent similar events from happening in the future.
The school is extremely grateful to Martin and Smajo for sharing their stories with such honesty and courage. Their visit will remain a powerful and meaningful experience for the St Cuthbert’s community.
