On Thursday 8th May 2025 pupils and students paid tribute to World War II veterans as part of the 80th anniversary celebration of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. Pupils, students and staff were invited to share any family connections to the war, and everyone contributed to a special display titled "Honouring Our Heroes" to mark this significant occasion.
Kate Casey, the Head of History explained: “We began the day with a prayer led by the department, remembering the bravery of those ex-St Cuthbert’s pupils involved in the conflict and acknowledging our school’s ties to World War II.”
For Key Stage 3 pupils, lessons revolved around the significance of VE Day. They conducted research on local war veterans and created posters to add to the ‘Heroes’ display.
We also hosted a ‘street party’ during lunchtime, offering celebratory snacks and games inspired by the World War II era.
“VE Day is a reminder that peace was achieved through immense courage and sacrifice,” Mrs. Casey reflected. “By commemorating our heroes, we ensure their legacy continues and their valuable lessons remain with us.”
