Pastoral Care Overview

Pastoral Care Overview

Excellent pastoral care for every individual boy is at the heart of St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School. Our distinctive Catholic tradition and concern for the well-being of everyone is a lived reality.

One of the school’s key characteristics and therefore its values, is that of diversity. At St Cuthbert’s we work to create and sustain a vibrant, inclusive community reflecting the expansive demographics and rich mixture of Newcastle’s population. Part of this is to ensure that all our pupils learn to live in communion with one another and can find sanctuary within the school to develop as a person, fully conscious of their responsibilities to themselves, to others, and to God.

Personal Development Programme

Our pastoral care is supported by a comprehensive personal development programme. Our boys grow in maturity and many demonstrate a strong capacity for self-reflection, understanding how their decision-making affects their success at school and their futures. Our boys are courteous and caring towards others, and their sensitive spiritual awareness of the world around them, reflect well their appreciation of the ethos of the school as a faith community.

Pastoral System

Each boy is a member of a Year Group under the leadership of a Head of Year, ably supported by an Assistant Head of Year. These staff have responsibility for the boys’ pastoral care and welfare. Each boy is also a member of a Form Class and has a tutor with whom they meet daily to review and support their progress and to address issues raised through our extensive personal development and spiritual, moral, social, and cultural education programme. The school is also fortunate to have the assistance of the local clergy who can offer spiritual, sacramental, and pastoral support.

School Council Reps and prefects are given supervised duties and responsibilities and act as role models and guides for the younger pupils. The school offers medical support for boys with health needs. There is also support from a a professional counsellor and a range of other pastoral staff whom the pupils may contact. All boys can contribute their views on their pastoral life through a school council, house councils, confidential appraisals and surveys.
